Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec

Overview

The Facility has three Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) FieldSpec spectroradiometers available for loan – the FieldSpec Pro, the FieldSpec 3 High Resolution, and the FieldSpec 4. All models of the FieldSpec range are broadly similar in operation, and this page will provide a general overview of the instrument series with a focus on the FieldSpec 3 High Resolution model. Where differences exist between models, interactive footnotes are provided to give more context.

The FieldSpec 3 collects across the visible to the short wave infrared (350 nm –2500 nm) spectral range. Collection is conducted using a laptop, connected to the ASD FieldSpec 3 via a wired or wireless Ethernet connection1.

Designed to collect solar reflectance, radiance and irradiance measurements, these instruments are ideal for applications in mining, optical remote sensing, oceanography, forestry, plant physiology and geology.

This system can be used to collect data using a fibre-optic extension, to provide up to a total of 7 m distance from the ASD unit. This can be especially useful when samples are required from above without the need of a physical stand. Samples can be collected using a carbon-fibre boom, with a specifically adapted head mount to collect samples at nadir.

The FieldSpec 3 can also be used with a contact probe and a leaf clip, allowing the easy collection of small sample spectra. Additional accessories include a cosine diffuser for irradiance measurements, an illuminated turntable ideally suited for laboratory measurements of soils and fine grained material, and the RTS-3ZC integrating sphere for measurements of the reflectance and transmission spectra of small samples (such as leaves or soil samples enclosed within an optical cell).
