AirYX SkySpec 2D MAX-DOAS

Overview

The AirYX SkySpec 2D is a multi-axis differential optical absorption spectrometer (MAX-DOAS) measuring multiple trace gases in the UV-VIS spectral range. As implied by the name, scans are taken in both azimuth and zenith angles, allowing for a full hemisphere scan.

Spectra acquired from the SkySpec 2D can be analysed to gain retrieval profiles of the trace gases and aerosols. The in-built retrieval algorithms with the instrument can supply the column densities of the gases nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), tropospheric ozone (O₃), formaldehyde (HCHO), the halogen oxides, and nitrous acid (HONO). However, other retrievals can be conducted to acquire further trace gas profiles.

The instrument consists of three individual components: a telescope scanner unit, containing a rotating prism which reflects light through a lens and into a 5 m long fibre optic cable attached to the unit; a spectrometer unit, consisting of a UV-VIS range and VIS range spectrometer, which receives input from the fibre optic cable; and a paired laptop which controls the telescope and spectrometer units, as well as evaluates the acquired spectra to generate differential slant column densities.

The telescope unit is bundled with a survey tripod for portable, short term deployment, or can be securely attached to masonry or scaffolding for more long term projects. The spectrometer and laptop control unit come with a weather proof enclosure, but can be also be sited indoors.

Differential slant column densities can be converted to total column densities in post processing, allowing for the determination of trace gas surface concentrations. Please contact the facility for more information.
