The NERC Field Spectroscopy Facility (FSF) is an expanding world class facility supporting Earth System Science. It comprises a pool of high quality field spectroradiometers with associated calibration and support equipment. The facility is based in the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh and is physically housed in the Grant Institute at the University’s Kings Buildings site.
Instruments are available either for loan for NERC supported research, or for hire for commissioned research projects. Access to FSF resources is available free of charge to the UK research community, subject to expert peer review by the FSF Steering Committee.
An average of 30 applications are received each year, typically 17 of those are to new users. User training is therefore an important aspect of FSF work and is offered to all new, and existing users if required. Training is usually performed in-house on a one-to-one basis.
The science supported by FSF is multi disciplinary, and since 1994, has led to over 260 scientific publications, including more than 80 papers in international refereed journals, 30 book chapters, in excess of 120 conference papers and at least 35 PhD theses.
